                            Zorba

On days when it is too wet to do sport we usually do Jump Jam in the hall.

On Thursday 27th May Ms K took us all to the hall to teach us a Greek dance called the Zorba.

This was the day that our Stage Challenge stars were at the TSB Arena rehearsing for their big show, so they missed out.

Ms K put us into our class groups and then we got into a circle and started practising the Zorba dance.

In these photos you can see Ms K encouraging Room 6 (top) and Room 8 to get the steps right.

Thanks Ms K!

                              Principal’s Comment

The Dominion Post today reported that over the past three weeks, we have had only four days without rain.  Two of those days without rain were Saturdays, which is great for the netballers, footballers, rugby and hockey players.  The inclement weather has meant that students have been stuck inside their classes during their break times, an entirely unsatisfactory situation for our many students who thrive with a regular dose of fresh air and active outside play time.  Credit must go to our students, however, who have found sensible inside activities to occupy themselves with during their break times.

It is tempting for students, knowing that it may be a cold wet inside day, to bring to school i-Pods, MP3 players, electronic games and other similarly expensive and precious toys. We do not allow these items at school, mainly due to the problems that arise when they are lost or stolen.  We understand that many families need to communicate with each other after school via text message, and for this reason cell phones are allowed but must be handed in to teachers so that they can be placed in the safe.

Teachers do their best to keep students’ phones, wallets and bus passes secure during the day, but even our best efforts are sometimes  not enough.  Students need to do their part, by handing in phones and wallets. Unfortunately we have had three separate incidents of cell phone theft this term.  We are of course dealing with these incidents on a case by case basis, but it is a reminder to all of us to be careful with our valuables.  If it is not essential that your child brings a cell phone to school, I recommend that they leave theirs at home, along with all those other items too precious for school.

Inter-Intermediate

Cross Country 2010

Last Friday 36 of our school’s top runners travelled to Trentham Memorial Park to represent SWIS at the Inter-Zone Cross Country.

It was a cold start, but the day warmed up to be quite sunny (even if the grounds were a bit soggy).  Every one had a great time.

The race was roughly 2.5km. The river was too high to cross, but the race was still challenging.  “It was very tiring, but I had a great time.” said Katya.

All in all, the Inter-Zone Cross Country was a great success. Congratulations to all the runners, and well done to Kelsey, Jordan and Ruairi, who placed in the top ten!
