Curriculum Report

Evaluation

The budget this year was $400 (P.E.) and has been sufficient to cover the cost of new equipment.  Purchases made this year have included new indoor balls (called wholly rollers), shuttle-cocks, and elastics.

Topics

In the first two terms we have covered athletics, co-operative games, fitness testing, cross-country, basketball, and rugby.

Interpretation of the data

There is no significant difference between the achievement of boys and girls but a greater number of boys are achieving at Level 4.

The majority of students are achieving at Level 3.  Only 5 students are still developing their basic motor skills (at Level 2).

Almost all Year 7s are achieving at Level 3.

99% of Year 8 students are achieving at Level 3 and above.  Just over a quarter of them are at Level 4.

There is no significant difference between the achievement of students of different ethnicities. The only notable feature is that 20% of all Maori students are achieving at level 4, which is the highest percentage among all ethnicities.

Areas for Improvement

The goals we have set out for the second half of the year are to:

  • Develop the skills of the students to raise their standard of achievement to higher levels.  We aim to have the majority of Year 8s achieving at Level 4 and some of the more able Year 7s at the same level by the end of the year;
  • Give more time to the five students who are at the lower end in order to help them in their co-ordination and to improve their confidence. We will need to give them more one-to-one assistance while the rest of the group are active.
  • Extend the high achievers already at Level 4 so that they will be moving towards or even reaching Level 5 standards.  Allowing them to teach others will assist them too.

Intended Actions

In the coming months we will look to purchase new coloured team bands, and perhaps a range of sporting balls to cover other areas where there is need.

Terms 3 and 4 will include units covering badminton, volleyball, team games, trust activities, wrestling, co-operative games, and final fitness testing.

Possible barriers to achievement include limited indoor space, limited lesson time, and, for some students, lack of motivation in sporting activities.  The first two barriers we cannot change, but through our attitudes and enthusiasm we try to minimise the latter obstacle.

Reporting

This report was made during a meeting with both P.E. teachers after reflection and evaluation of the first two terms. Together we regularly debrief and plan before, during, and after lessons.

This analysis has been useful for us in identifying the lower and higher achievers and how we can look to improve the standards of achievement for all students.
