Te Reo Maori Report
All classes have a twenty minute Te Reo lesson each week. I take this class and classroom teachers reinforce the lesson during the week.
A long term plan was drawn up for all students. This plan included preparing for whole school powhiri. A recent whole school powhiri to visitors from Korea was very successful. The whole school is now able to take a more active part and students from the kapa haka took opportunity to lead the whole school in this event. The kapa haka group also played a major roll in the closing ceremony of our display at the Newtown library (supported by Te Riria Proctor and Ratan Parbhu).
Some stories of Maui were covered which linked into music department trip to the ‘Maui’ production. Over half of the school attended.
Other topics include greetings, iwi groups, Maori geography, matariki, myths and legends, Karakia, pronunciation, family, the bush, the sea, seasons and tikanga.
A patu made in the woodwork department by Andrew, is given to the class that has made the best effort for the week has also been a great success.
It is pleasing to see the sincerity with which all students are embracing this kaupapa.
Tihei Mauri Ora.
Budget has been spent on Maori calendars for staff with information on the seasons, stars, planets and moons.
I am currently liaising with the Wellington Teachers College on new draft curriculum document.
