Pandemic Flu Update 3

23 June 2009

This provides further information and updates the previous bulletins on the school website.

Wellington now has the highest confirmed number of H1N1 influenza cases in the country and it is likely that the number of cases will continue to grow along with the usual seasonal influenza and viral colds.

The Ministry of Health has advised that New Zealand is now using a management strategy for the influenza pandemic strain. The continuing aim is to reduce the impact of the virus on people, communities and the health system at a time when they are already managing the usual winter flu increases.

Parents will be aware that there are large numbers of children and some staff at SWIS who have been away from school with illness. The Board and Management team at the school appreciate everyone’s efforts in helping reduce the transmission of illness by keeping children home when they are unwell.

Hygiene measures that all should be encouraged to use to reduce the spread of illness are:

ü      Cover your nose and mouth when coughing or sneezing

ü       Use tissues, rather than your hand to capture respiratory secretions, and dispose of the tissues in the nearest rubbish bin after use

ü        Wash your hands often with soap and water, alcohol-based hand rub, or antiseptic handwash especially after sneezing or blowing your nose.

We will be continuing to monitor the situation at SWIS and further updates will be available as necessary.

The best way to help manage the flu is to stay at home until you are well and symptom free for at least 24 hours. If you are concerned about your child’s health phone your GP or Healthline (0800 611 116) for advice.

Please ring in to the school office each day if your child is absent.

This is a further reminder to ensure that your daytime contact details are current - please update any changes to your phone numbers with the school office on 939-9872.
