The Great Garbology Musicology Challenge!

Task:

To design and make a musical instrument using junk and/or recycled materials.

Instructions:

By the end of term, you will have constructed a musical instrument out of junk or recycled materials. You will need to think about the following before you start construction:

  • What sounds do you want it to make? (Loud, soft, high, low…)
  • Is it going to be a pitched (i.e. makes definite notes, like a flute, a piano, a violin or a trumpet) or unpitched (i.e. no definites notes, like a drum)?
  • How big is it going to be? (Take into account how you are going to get it to school and up the stairs to the music room!)
  • What materials do you have available?

Assessment:

You will be assessed on the following:

  • Originality – how many times has this been done before. (Shakers will be marked low, as they turn up every year!)
  • Construction – how well made the instrument is, and what materials have been used.
  • Sounds – what sort of sounds can be produced by the instrument.

The instruments are due at SWIS in Week 9 of this term. Please bring them with you to your music class.

Have fun with this!
