Principal’s Comment

Students face competition everywhere. Some will thrive on it and reach new heights. Others will give up for fear of failing.

Here are some suggestions that may help your child deal with competition.

Your child needs to know that a loss does not make them losers. In competition someone wins and someone else loses. We need to be able to deal with both. Help your child find the rewards in doing their best and show your pride in them making the attempt.

Encourage your child to focus on their effort, not on winning. Be sure they know effort can have rewards equal to winning. It is just as important to be able to say “I tried my best” as “I won”.

Encourage your child to compete against themselves rather than others. Your child needs to know the value of being as good as they can be. This doesn’t mean they have to be better than others.

Competitive feelings are normal. The best competitors can always find something positive to say about the achievements of others. Learning to be able to praise others overcomes feelings of envy and resentment. Blaming others makes competition unhealthy.

Often a child compares themselves unfavourably to other members of the family. This can happen without a word of criticism from home and can be very destructive. Guard against this with continual comfort and support. Don’t let competition develop within the family. The outside world has enough competition.

Encourage your child to be involved in activities they are good at and develop their special and individual talents.

When you attend sports events ensure your behaviour sends the right message to your child. Be positive. Praise examples of good play rather than focus on mistakes.

If you have a champion in the family, make it clear that your love and support isn’t dependent on their winning. Even champions have their off days and need to be able to take these in their stride.

Empty Computer Cartridges

Don’t throw them away!

Send them to school with your child. We will collect them and can raise $4 for each one, any size. Remember your empty ones at work as well. Ask friends and family to collect for you.

Let’s see how many we can get!!

OUTSTANDING ACHIEVEMENT

On Friday 30th October scenario writers Andrew B. and Bryony C. flew up to Auckland for the Future Problem Solving National Finals at Carey Park. It was a fun weekend of activities ranging from flag making and a people search to making futuristic pets out of junk and sightseeing. The serious part of the weekend was the booklet and scenario competitions on the Saturday. Andrew was placed 2nd in the Junior Division Scenario Writing Competition while Bryony was placed 1st in the Middle Division. She also came away with the “Best on-site Scenario Writer” award. Wow! What a successful weekend!

Bryony C.

Because Bryony’s scenario was placed 1st in the Middle division, beating out Year 9 and 10 students, she is eligible to go to the International Finals of FPS at LaCrosse University, Wisconsin, in June 2010.

Working Together

Kia Kotahi Tatou

6pm

Today, Wednesday November 4th

School Library

I warmly invite all parents/caregivers to be part of this important new initiative to lift our student achievement even further.

We will be holding a workshop on practical ideas to help your child with reading at home. There will be ideas for developing readers and for extending excellent readers.

I believe if we can all work closely together in an atmosphere of mutual respect and trust, we can be a truly outstanding school. This will be an opportunity to work towards this.

The meeting will just take one hour including a light supper that will be provided. Younger children will be supervised and entertained during the workshop.

Please remember this date and time! I look forward to seeing you there.
