Working together—Kia Kotahi Tatou

Last Wednesday evening we held our first Working Together—Kia Kotahi Tatou workshop. It was terrific that so many parents were able to find the time to attend.

This workshop was the first of what we intend will be an on-going process of working together to help our children achieve to higher levels.

Principal’s Comment

Negotiation is a very valuable tool at this age. It is worth respecting the increasing maturity of your child by encouraging his/her participation in decision-making. You may be surprised at the level of common sense that may emerge. A possible area for negotiation could be in the establishment of daily routines. This area is important because it encourages good habits and reduces stress. It is important to remember that negotiation may mean giving something away even when you think you know best.

Students who feel they are supported in their time management have learnt a valuable life skill from you.

The following are some suggestions for daily student time management:

Before school

Make sure the student is woken in time or has their own alarm clock.

Supply a healthy breakfast—substantial enough to get to school and sustain the body and mind for 3-4 hours.

Encourage leaving 5-10 minutes earlier before they have to.

Try to ensure a positive and relaxed start to the day.

After school

Encourage a complete unpack of bags after school.

Avoid the quick turning on of TV—unless there is a clear time limit.

Sight Home and School diary.

Have a snack available.

In the evening encourage your child to ...

Check clothing for the next day.

Pack their school bag.

Get any notes written and any money required.

Check Home and School diary for next day—what’s coming?

Set aside time to relax.

Follow simple homework routines.

Empty Computer Cartridges

Don’t throw them away!

Send them to school with your child. We will collect them and can raise $4 for each one, any size. Remember your empty ones at work as well. Ask friends and family to collect for you.

Let’s see how many we can get!!

ART EXTENSION GROUP VISITS SECRETARY OF EDUCATION

On Tuesday 3rd November the Art extension group took a bus into town to see our art work that was selected to be exhibited at the Ministry of Education. While we were there we met the Secretary for Education, Mrs. Karen Sewell (photo above) and looked at the art work in her office.

Then we went to Readings Cinema and saw other works of ours being exhibited alongside other intermediate students. We stayed at Readings for lunch (it was scrumptious!) and then caught the bus back to SWIS.

It was an awesome trip. Thank you Koka Rea.
