Why choose SWIS

South Wellington Intermediate School (SWIS) is a specialist Year 7–8 school, designed to support students aged 11–13 at this important stage of their development.

We focus on the whole child—supporting their learning, wellbeing, and growth as they become confident, independent thinkers. Our students experience a wide range of opportunities across academic, cultural, and sporting areas.

With specialist teachers and a variety of subjects, students build strong relationships across the school and develop skills that prepare them well for secondary education.

We value working in partnership with whānau and look forward to sharing your child’s learning journey over these important two years.

Positive Behaviour for Learning (PB4L)

South Wellington Intermediate is a Positive Behaviour 4 Learning school. We strive to always live by our values of being Safe, Respectful and Responsible.

We have created a positive school culture through partnerships between students and staff, the school and whanau as well as the wider community. We recognise that a positive school environment leads to happy and engaged students who strive to achieve their best at all times.

Our Learning Philosophy

Integrated Learning

At SWIS, students connect what they already know with new learning. This helps them think more deeply, solve problems, and apply their skills in different situations.

Inquiry Learning

Learning is inquiry-based, which means students explore questions, ideas, and real-world problems. Teachers guide students to think critically and build a deeper understanding.

A Broad Curriculum

Students learn across all areas of the New Zealand Curriculum, including English, Mathematics, Science, The Arts, Health and Physical Education, Social Sciences, Languages, and Technology.

This approach helps students become confident, creative, and independent learners.

About the SWIS Logo

South Wellington Intermediate School adopted their current logo in 2015. The two Kōwhai flowers opening from a koru reflects the students flourishing with the two flowers reflecting the two year groups.
