SWIS Athletics Day – 10 March!

All ākonga will be participating in our annual SWIS Athletics Day at Newtown Park on Monday 10 March and we’re looking forward to seeing them give the various events their best shot! Whānau are welcome to come along and support – the more cheering the better!

The events taking place will include track and field events.

Field events: Discus, High Jump, Shot Put, Vortex and Long Jump.
Track events: 100m, 200m, 800m and 1500m, 4x100m Relay.
Ākonga have pre-selected their track and field events but will be encouraged to sign up for other events
on the day.

There are a few things to know before the day.

  • Ākonga need to be at Newtown Park by 8.45am. Homeroom teachers will be taking the roll at the park.
  • Ākonga will be dismissed from the park at 3pm. For health and safety reasons, ākonga will not be allowed to leave the stadium during the day.
  • Bring lots of food, water, a hat, sports shoes, and a warm jacket. If they own running spikes (maximum
length 5mm) and wish to use them, they are welcome to do so.
  • Ākonga must wear PE uniform but may choose to accessorise with their team colours.
    The team colours are:
    ● Pohutukawa / red for Rooms 2, 11, 13, 14, and 20
    ● Horoeka / green for Rooms 1, 5, 10 and 15
    ● Nikau/ blue for Rooms 3, 12, 18, and 21

If ākonga choose to cycle or scooter to Newtown Park, they will need to secure their bike/scooter with a chain and lock.

We will be running a BBQ fundraiser and selling a small range of treats. This will be available throughout the day. Money raised will go towards the purchase of lunchtime sports equipment for our school. If your child is planning to bring money, please make sure that it is only a small amount of up to $5 as students will be responsible for any valuables they bring on the day.

It is our expectation that all students will participate in the school athletics event. However, if your child is unable to participate, please advise your child’s classroom teacher by email or a written note. Non-participating students will be expected to support their class and peers from the stands.

Note: no facepaint is permitted in the grounds. Please keep the environment in mind and do not bring items such as feather boas, glitter, and plastic/metallic pom poms. Do not bring devices, jewelry or anything valuable. If ākonga bring phones and devices, they will be responsible for them. If they choose to use them during the day, this is in contravention of our school rules and their phone will be confiscated.

We hope to have an amazing day and look forward to seeing all our students and whānau at athletics.
